President Yoweri Museveni has ordered for the eviction of the encroachers of the Namanve Forest area and wetland in Kiira Municipality, Wakiso District.
The President gave the directive in a letter to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Gen Kale Kayihura after a tip off from the works ministry and the National Forest Authority.
Museveni wrote in the letter that “It has been brought to his attention by the Ministry of Works and Transport officials together with National Forest Authority that a group of people including veterans and government officials encroached on Namanve Forest Reserve and wetland. These people cut down the trees and made illegal developments on it,”.
Prior to the eviction order, Museveni reveals in the letter that he had engaged the leaders of the different groups occupying the land, explaining to them about government’s plan to use the land for the development of the standard gauge railway and Bukasa Port.
He revealed he requested them to vacate the land voluntarily but he has been informed they are still in occupation.
The president therefore is requesting the concerned to evict the occupants of the said land so as to pave way for the development of the above mentioned projects.”
The land in question had been given to the Uganda Investment Authority (UIA) by the government of Uganda for industrial development.
Some “investors” however resorted to using the land to construct residential houses while others sold off some part to other people who are currently in occupation, something that the president disagreed with.
